What is Esophageal Dilation?

Esophageal dilation is a precision-driven procedure designed to expand a constricted portion of the esophagus, promoting effortless and comfortable swallowing. Techniques vary, with many carried out under sedation during an endoscopy. Sometimes, for your comfort, a local anesthetic spray might be applied to the throat, succeeded by the passage of a weighted dilator from the mouth to the esophagus.

Why is it Necessary?

Esophageal strictures, or narrowing, often arise from scar tissue due to acid reflux or other inherent conditions. Those affected routinely face swallowing challenges, feeling as if food lodges in their throat, creating discomfort.

During the Procedure:

  • Sedation and local anesthesia may be administered.
  • An endoscope is carefully introduced through your mouth, progressing to the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
  • Depending on the assessment, either a balloon or dilators are chosen for esophageal expansion.
  • A slight pressure sensation is normal, but your breathing remains unaffected.

Post-procedure:

  • After a concise observation, you can resume your regular activities.
  • Once anesthesia effects recede, drinking can recommence.
  • A temporary mild sore throat may occur.
  • If sedatives were used, ensure a driver is available post-monitoring.

Potential Complications

  • Though infrequent, especially under our esteemed doctors, complications can arise.
  • There's a minimal risk of esophageal lining perforation or bleeding.
  • Some sedation aftereffects are possible.
  • Should post-op symptoms like chest pain, fever, or unusual bowel movements appear, contact your physician promptly.

Repeat Dilation

  • The requirement for recurrent dilations depends on the causative factor and its intensity.
  • Incremental dilation minimizes complication risks.
  • Following optimal dilation of the stricture, further sessions may be unnecessary.
  • Acid-suppressing medications can be advantageous if acid reflux induced the stricture.
